Belong

There is room at the table for all who are hungry.

The Event
For many of us, the old categories don't work anymore–sacred or secular, science or faith. Of course, there is a challenge when your boxes break apart: you lose your old answers to life's biggest questions. Why am I here? Where did I come from? How do I know what is true?

This is a lonely process. Most communities find a comfortable center of gravity in one of three perspectives: science, faith, or art. So, blurring the boundaries and exploring the spaces between them can be dangerous.

Belong is a safe place to come have honest discussion about doubts, hopes, fears, and faith. A place where no question is off limits, but you can find a burgeoning community of people who will welcome you with all your strangeness.  A place where the unlikely gather around a table and find a place to belong.

What We'll Talk About
How do we know God and accept science?
What's the science behind who we are?
Where does consciousness come from, and why do so many people yearn for God?
How do we create art that transcends the cultural ghettos of the church, or the secular?
How do we lead people in an age where the old answers seem trite?
Can we find and form safe spiritual communities?

Table Setters

Michael Gungor
Michael Gungor, an avid Chinese food connoisseur and relatively cheap date currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters. He spends most of his time using his opposable thumbs and evolved mammalian brain to to strum, record and write about the absurdity and wonder of existence.

Science Mike
Mike McHargue is an author, speaker, and podcaster on the intersection of science and spirituality. Mike is a former atheist who finds God through the cosmology and neurology as much as theology and community.

Amena Brown
Amena Brown is a poet, speaker, and author speaking as  a voice for a generation searching for the real and genuine in an age of constant carbon copy.

Betsy Ouelette
Pastor Betsy is the pastor at Good Samaritan UMC in Tallahassee, FL. Betsy creates safe, nurturing spiritual communities that welcome all to the table.

Lanny Donoho
Formerly that funny host/MC guy on stage at Bigstuf, Catalyst, Orange and…creator and producer of those events as well, Lanny now spends his time helping other people do creative things, and catching up on those cosmological, neuroscience, and philosophy books in his Kindle. You might also catch him on a few podcasts chatting with some intriguing people, or developing his understanding of culture by watching Game of Thrones, Louie, and Shark Tank.

Where to Stay
The event is in downtown Alpharetta, just north of Atlanta. We recommend staying close by–Atlanta traffic can be intense.

Where to Eat
There's a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the event.

1 in 100
There's only 100 seats for this event to facilitate a safe atmosphere and ample time for discussion. We'll also create a closed Facebook group prior to the event for anyone who wants to coordinate ride sharing/airport shuttles/etc.

Food, Faith, Friday - The Village Square

  • First Baptist Church

Meet the "God Squad" - the brains behind "Faith, Food, Friday."  They're running with the contrarian notion that maybe we should be talking about the challenging issues that surround faith in America after all?  With faith (or lack thereof) used too often as a political tool, the public square could probably stand a change of pace.  Whoever you are, whatever your beliefs, bring an open mind, an open heart (and an appetite) for what we hope will be a continuing conversation that defies the biases we seem to have against each other.  Every program will include a changing cast of characters to spark the discussion, from leaders in the faith community to scientists, to secularists, to - who knows - maybe you.  We hope you'll join us as we explore what happens when we cross each others' thresholds and break a little bread together.

About our topic:
Have you noticed a lack of shame out there in the world?  Or maybe you’ve noticed there’s a little too much?  The God Squad will discuss the culture of shame inside of church communities, in society more broadly and whether we ought to refine the balance between guilt and shame (and whether know the difference).

Forum Discussion - Letter to a Christian Nation

  • Proof Brewing Co.

My church (Good Samaritan UMC) is hosting a discussion around Sam Harris's Letter to a Christian Nation. I'll be there as a "panelist," but this will really be a laid back forum for believers and unbelievers alike to talk about the book. For those who may not be familiar with Sam Harris, he's a neuroscientist and prominent atheist, and this book confronts the core claims and behaviors of American Christianity.

This is a discussion, not a time of proselytization. As such, I'd love to see freethinkers, agnostics, and atheists there to balance our discussion. The event will be at Proof Brewing Co.

If you plan to participate in the discussion, please read the book! You can find it on Amazon.
