Adam and Eve versus the Chimpanzee

There's a great piece in the Economist about the escalating debate between Young Earth Creationists and more progressive theologies. Some of the survey data is particularly pointed: young people who attend church are likely to report that their church is "anti-science."

My opinion is unsurprising to anyone who knows me. Any attempt to prop up a literal interpretation of the creation account serves only to undermine the church and weaken people's belief in God. It's time to put this issue to bed.

Adam and Eve were not real people. The human race did not emerge from two individuals. Life on Earth evolved. If the Bible's authority rests on contradicting any of those points, we're doomed.

I don't think the Bible rests on those points though. Rob Bell is writing a terrific series on that very idea.
